NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) allows a new way of providing disability support. It gives you more choice in how and when you receive supports. People who are under 65 years old and have a permanent or significant disability may be eligible for NDIS.  You can apply for an individual funded NDIS plan online or telephone 1800 800 110.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was introduced in 2013. The scheme is overseen by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and allows individuals with a permanent and significant disability to access government funding.

The NDIS provides the person with a disability with the choice to decide where and how to use their funding. Supports include employment, allied health, accommodation, independence, being involved in outdoor activities, sport, and community access.

Through the NDIS, funding goes directly to the individual to allocate spending on the services they need from the provider of their choice. A plan is created for each eligible NDIS participant based on specific individual needs and goals.

How Does the NDIS Work?

The NDIS will take a flexible, whole-of-life approach to work with you, your family/carer, to develop an individualized plan. The NDIS gives you a voice, more choice, and more control over how, when, and where your supports are provided and also gives you the certainty you will receive the support you need over your lifetime.

If you are eligible for the NDIS, you will receive the funding on an annual basis to purchase the supports, services, aids, and equipment that you require. Your needs will be assessed in a planning and assessment process managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Procare provides a number of support options to help get started with your NDIS planning and ensure you get the most from your plan

Am I Eligible for or Can I Access the NDIS?

You are eligible for the NDIS if you:

  • Are under 65 when you make your application.
  • You are an Australian Citizen or resident or permanent visa holder.
  • And meet the disability or early intervention requirements.

If you are aged 65 years and over, you will not be eligible for the NDIS. In most cases, you will receive support through the Commonwealth aged care system.

How Does NDIS Funding Work?

The NDIS provides ongoing funding for all ‘reasonable and necessary’ disability equipment, care, and support services. In the future, funding for all disability services will be allocated to individuals, not service providers. This will ensure that there is both choice and control for people with disabilities who decide what services and supports they need.

The National Disability Insurance Act, passed by the Commonwealth Parliament in 2012, sets out guidelines to help decide what can be funded, but generally, the supports and services provided to you, if eligible, need to assist you to;

  • How Does the NDIS Work?
  • Become As Independent As Possible
  • Develop Skills For Day-To-Day Living
  • Participate In The Community

In practice, this means providing support, as and if required, in areas including:

  • Mobility
  • Communication
  • Self-Care And Self-Management
  • Social Interactions
  • Learning
  • Capacity For Social And Economic Participation
